Al-Adab al-Mufrad

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he reports from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he used to supplicate with these words: "O my Lord! Forgive my mistakes, my ignorance, and my exceeding the limits in all my affairs, and forgive all that You know better than I. O Allah! Forgive my intentional sins, my ignorance, and all my sins committed in jest. And all these sins have occurred from me. O Allah! Forgive my past and future sins, and my hidden and apparent sins. You are the One Who brings forward and You are the One Who delays, and You have power over all things."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he reports from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he used to supplicate: "O Allah! Forgive my sins, my ignorance, and my exceeding the limits in my affairs. And forgive every sin of mine which You know better than I do. O Allah! Forgive my sins committed in jest and in seriousness, and my mistakes and those committed deliberately, and all these sins I have committed."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu’adh (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took my hand and said: “O Mu’adh.” I replied: “I am present.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Indeed, I love you.” I replied: “By Allah, I also love you.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Shall I not teach you some words which you should recite after every prayer?” I replied: “Yes, indeed!” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “You should say: O Allah! Help me to remember You, to thank You, and to worship You in the best manner.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), he said that a man said (in prayer) in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "All praise is for Allah alone, such praise that is very pure and blessed." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Who is the person who uttered these words?" The man remained silent and thought that perhaps he had suddenly said something which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) disliked. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked again: "Who is he? He has indeed spoken rightly." The man said: "I said it, and my intention was also good." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Him in Whose hand is my soul, I saw thirteen angels competing with each other as to who among them would take these words up to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) intended to enter the toilet, he would recite this supplication: "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from male and female evil jinn."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would come out of the toilet, he would say: "O Allah! I ask You for forgiveness."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach us this supplication just as he would teach a surah from the Qur'an: "O Allah! I seek refuge with You from the punishment of Hell, I seek refuge with You from the punishment of the grave, I seek refuge with You from the trial of the False Messiah (Dajjal), and I seek refuge with You from the trials of life and death, and from the trial of the grave as well."

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): I spent one night at the house of my maternal aunt, Umm al-Mu’minin, Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). During the night, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) got up and relieved himself, that is, urinated. Then he washed his hands and face and went back to sleep. Then he got up and came to the water-skin, untied its strap, and performed a moderate ablution. He did not use much water, but he completed the ablution thoroughly and started praying. I got up and stretched, fearing that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) might see me and think that I was awake and watching him. I performed ablution. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was still standing and praying, so I stood on his left side. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took me by the hand and moved me to his right side, until he completed thirteen rak‘ahs of his night prayer. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) lay down and slept until he began to snore. And when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) slept, he would snore. Then Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) informed the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about the Fajr prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led the prayer but did not perform ablution again. Among the supplications of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) were these words: «اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ فِي قَلْبِي نُورًا، وَفِي سَمْعِي نُورًا، وَعَنْ يَمِينِي نُورًا، وَعَنْ يَسَارِي نُورًا، وَفَوْقِي نُورًا، وَتَحْتِي نُورًا، وَأَمَامِي نُورًا، وَخَلْفِي نُورًا، وَأَعْظِمْ لِي نُورًا» “O Allah! Place light in my heart, place light in my ears, place light on my right side, and place light on my left side, place light above me, below me, in front of me, and behind me, and make for me a great light.” Kurayb (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Seven things (are written) in the chest (box) with me. I do not remember. Then I met someone from the descendants of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and he told me those things. They were: Place light in my muscles, my flesh, my blood, my hair, and my skin, and he mentioned two more things.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would stand up at night to pray, after completing the prayer he would praise Allah, with such praise as is befitting to His Being, and then at the end he would recite this supplication: "O Allah! Place light in my heart, place light in my ears, place light in my eyes, place light on my right, place light on my left, place light in front of me, place light behind me, and increase light for me, increase light for me, and increase me in light."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand for prayer at midnight, he would recite this supplication: «اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ، أَنْتَ نُورُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَنْ فِيهِنَّ، وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ، أَنْتَ قَيِّمُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَنْ فِيهِنَّ، وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ، أَنْتَ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَنْ فِيهِنَّ، أَنْتَ الْحَقُّ، وَوَعْدُكَ الْحَقُّ، وَلِقَاؤُكَ حَقٌّ، وَالْجَنَّةُ حَقٌّ، وَالنَّارُ حَقٌّ، وَالسَّاعَةُ حَقٌّ، اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ أَسْلَمْتُ، وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ، وَعَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْتُ، وَإِلَيْكَ أَنَبْتُ، وَبِكَ خَاصَمْتُ، وَإِلَيْكَ حَاكَمْتُ، فَاغْفِرْ لِي مَا قَدَّمْتُ وَمَا أَخَّرْتُ، وَمَا أَسْرَرْتُ وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ، أَنْتَ إِلَهِي، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ» "O Allah! All praise is for You alone, You are the Light of the heavens and the earth and whatever is in them. All praise is for You, You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth. All praise is for You, You are the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is in them. You are the Truth. Your promise is true. Meeting You is true. Paradise is true. Hell is true and the Hour is true. O Allah! I have submitted myself to You, and I have believed in You, and I have put my trust in You. I have turned to You. By Your power I have argued with my enemies and I have made You my judge, so forgive all my past and future sins, and my hidden and open sins. You are my God, there is no deity for me except You."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate with these words: "O Allah! I ask You for pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah! I ask You for well-being in my religion and my family and my wealth, and conceal my faults. Grant me security from fear, and protect me from in front of me, behind me, on my right, on my left, and from above me. And I seek refuge in Your greatness from being taken unaware from beneath me, that is, from being swallowed up."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rifa’ah Zurqi (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the day of the Battle of Uhud came and the polytheists were scattered, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Form ranks so that I may praise my Lord.” The noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) formed rows behind him, and he began to supplicate as follows: “O Allah! All praise is for You alone. O Allah! There is none who can restrict what You grant, and there is none who can bring near whom You distance, and there is none who can distance whom You bring near. There is none who can give what You withhold, and there is none who can withhold what You give. O Allah! Open for us the doors of Your blessings, mercy, bounty, and sustenance. O Allah! I ask You for enduring blessings that neither change nor vanish. O Allah! I ask You for blessings on the day of poverty and need, and for safety on the day of fear. O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You have given us, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You have withheld from us. O Allah! Make faith beloved to us, and adorn it in our hearts. Make disbelief, wickedness, and disobedience hateful to us, and make us among those who are guided. O Allah! Cause us to die as Muslims, keep us alive as Muslims, and join us with the righteous. Do not disgrace us, nor subject us to tribulation. O Allah! Curse the disbelievers, those who hinder from Your path and deny Your messengers. Send upon them severe calamity and punishment. O Allah! Curse those disbelievers who were given the Book (and denied it), O True Deity.” ‘Ali bin Madini (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I also heard this hadith from Muhammad bin Bishr, and he mentioned its chain of narration, but I do not narrate this chain (because I do not remember it well).
