بَابُ مَنْ لَمْ يَقْبَلِ الْهَدِيَّةَ لَمَّا دَخَلَ الْبُغْضُ فِي النَّاسِ
Chapter: One Who Did Not Accept a Gift When Hatred Spread Among People
Hadith 596
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: أَهْدَى رَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي فَزَارَةَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَاقَةً، فَعَوَّضَهُ، فَتَسَخَّطَهُ، فَسَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ يَقُولُ: ”يَهْدِي أَحَدُهُمْ فَأُعَوِّضُهُ بِقَدْرِ مَا عِنْدِي، ثُمَّ يَسْخَطُهُ وَايْمُ اللهِ، لاَ أَقْبَلُ بَعْدَ عَامِي هَذَا مِنَ الْعَرَبِ هَدِيَّةً إِلاَّ مِنْ قُرَشِيٍّ، أَوْ أَنْصَارِيٍّ، أَوْ ثَقَفِيٍّ، أَوْ دَوْسِيٍّ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: A man from Banu Fazarah gave a she-camel as a gift to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, so the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gave him a gift in return, but he became displeased (thinking it was less). I heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saying from the pulpit: "People give me gifts and I give them something in return according to my ability, yet they become displeased. By Allah, after this year, I will not accept a gift from anyone among the Arabs except a Qurayshi, Ansari, Thaqafi, or Dosi."
