It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that we were present in the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when a Bedouin came. He was wearing a cloak with silk borders (Sijjan). He came and stood near the head of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said: "Your companion, meaning Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), has humiliated every horseman," or he said, "intends to humiliate every horseman, that is, every honorable person, and has elevated every shepherd." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) caught hold of the border of his cloak and said: "Do I not see that you are wearing the dress of the foolish?" Then he said: "Indeed, when the time of death of Allah's Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) drew near, he said to his son: I advise you with a will. I command you with two things and forbid you from two things. I command you with «لا إله إلا الله», for if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed on one side of the scale and «لا إله إلا الله» on the other side, it would outweigh them all. And if the seven heavens and the seven earths became a closed ring, «لا إله إلا الله» would break them all. And the second is «سبحان الله وبحمده». It is the prayer of everything, and by its blessing, everything is provided with sustenance. And I forbid you from shirk and arrogance." I said, or it was said: "O Messenger of Allah! We have recognized shirk, but what is arrogance? Is it that one of us has a pair of clothes which he wears?" He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "No." He said: "Is it that one of us has two beautiful shoes and two beautiful straps for them?" He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "No." He said: "Is it that one of us has a riding animal on which he rides, is this arrogance?" He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "No." He said: "Is it that a person's friends sit with him, is this arrogance?" He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "No." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Then what is arrogance?" He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Rejecting the truth and looking down upon people."
