It is narrated from the three sons of Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that in Makkah Mukarramah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went to visit Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was ill, and he began to weep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Why are you weeping?” He replied: I fear that I will die in the land from which I migrated, just as Sa’d bin Khawlah (may Allah be pleased with him) died. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed: «اللَّهُمَّاشْفِسَعْدًا» “O Allah, grant Sa’d healing.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed three times. He said: I have abundant wealth, and my only heir is my daughter. Should I bequeath all my wealth in the way of Allah? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No.” He asked: Two-thirds? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No.” He said: Half of it? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No.” He said: May I bequeath one-third? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Bequeath one-third, and even one-third is much. Giving charity from your wealth is charity, spending on your family is also charity, and whatever your wife eats from your food is also charity for you. And if you leave your family well-off when you depart from this world, it is far better than leaving them in such a state that they have to stretch out their hands before people.” And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured with his hand.
