Chapter: The Sick Person Is Rewarded for What He Used to Do When Healthy
Hadith 500
حَدَّثَنَا قَبِيصَةُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ مَرْثَدٍ ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُخَيْمِرَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : ”مَا مِنْ أَحَدٍ يَمْرَضُ ، إِلا كُتِبَ لَهُ مِثْلُ مَا كَانَ يَعْمَلُ وَهُوَ صَحِيحٌ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person falls ill, he is given the reward for every deed that he used to do while he was healthy."
Hadith 501
حَدَّثَنَا عَارِمٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سِنَانٌ أبورَبِيعَةَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : ”مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمٍ ابْتَلاهُ اللَّهُ فِي جَسَدِهِ إِلا كُتِبَ لَهُ مَا كَانَ يَعْمَلُ فِي صِحَّتِهِ ، مَا كَانَ مَرِيضًا ، فَإِنْ عَافَاهُ أُرَاهُ قَالَ : عَسَلَهُ ، وَإِنْ قَبَضَهُ غَفَرَ لَهُ.“ حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ سِنَانٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، مِثْلَهُ ، وَزَادَ قَالَ : ”فَإِنْ شَفَاهُ عَسَلَهُ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Allah afflicts a Muslim with a bodily illness, then as long as he remains ill, he is given the reward of those deeds which he used to do when he was healthy. Then, if Allah grants him well-being, He gives him the ability to do good deeds before his death, and if He causes him to die, He forgives him." In another narration it is stated: "If He grants him recovery, He gives him the ability to do good deeds before his death."
Hadith 502
حَدَّثَنَا قُرَّةُ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِيَاسُ بْنُ أَبِي تَمِيمَةَ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : جَاءَتِ الْحُمَّى إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَتِ : ابْعَثْنِي إِلَى آثَرِ أَهْلِكَ عِنْدَكَ ، فَبَعَثَهَا إِلَى الأَنْصَارِ ، فَبَقِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ سِتَّةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيهِنَّ ، فَاشْتَدَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ ، فَأَتَاهُمْ فِي دِيَارِهِمْ ، فَشَكَوْا ذَلِكَ إِلَيْهِ ، فَجَعَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدْخُلُ دَارًا دَارًا ، وَبَيْتًا بَيْتًا ، يَدْعُو لَهُمْ بِالْعَافِيَةِ ، فَلَمَّا رَجَعَ تَبِعَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ مِنْهُمْ ، فَقَالَتْ : وَالَّذِي بَعَثَكَ بِالْحَقِّ ، إِنِّي لِمَنَ الأَنْصَارِ ، وَإِنَّ أَبِي لِمَنَ الأَنْصَارِ ، فَادْعُ اللَّهَ لِي كَمَا دَعَوْتَ لِلأَنْصَارِ ، قَالَ : ”مَا شِئْتِ ، إِنْ شِئْتِ دَعَوْتُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يُعَافِيَكِ ، وَإِنْ شِئْتِ صَبَرْتِ وَلَكِ الْجَنَّةُ“، قَالَتْ : بَلْ أَصْبِرُ ، وَلا أَجْعَلُ الْجَنَّةَ خَطَرًا .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that fever came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "Send me to those people with whom you have the closest connection." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent it to the Ansar. Fever remained with them for six days and six nights. This hardship was very burdensome for them, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went to their homes. They complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so he went from house to house and prayed for their well-being. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) returned, one of their women followed him and said: "By the One Who has sent you with the truth! Surely, I am also from the Ansar. My father is also an Ansari, so pray for me as you prayed for the Ansar." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "What do you want? If you wish, I will pray to Allah Almighty to grant you well-being, and if you wish, be patient and Paradise is for you." She said: "Rather, I will be patient and I will not put my entry into Paradise at risk."
Hadith 503
وَعَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : مَا مِنْ مَرَضٍ يُصِيبُنِي أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ مِنَ الْحُمَّى ، لأَنَّهَا تَدْخُلُ فِي كُلِّ عُضْوٍ مِنِّي ، وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ يُعْطِي كُلَّ عُضْوٍ قِسْطَهُ مِنَ الأَجْرِ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that no illness is more beloved to me than fever, because it enters every joint of the body, and Allah Almighty grants reward to every limb for its share.
Hadith 504
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي نُحَيْلَةَ ، قِيلَ لَهُ : ادْعُ اللَّهَ ، قَالَ :اللَّهُمَّ انْقُصْ مِنَ الْمَرَضِ ، وَلا تَنْقُصْ مِنَ الأَجْرِ ، فَقِيلَ لَهُ : ادْعُ ، ادْعُ ، فَقَالَ : اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ ، وَاجْعَلْ أُمِّي مِنَ الْحُورِ الْعِينِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Nahilah (may Allah be pleased with him), he was requested: Pray (for us). He supplicated thus: O Allah, lessen the illness but do not decrease the reward. It was requested of him: Pray more. He said: O Allah! Include me among Your close servants and join my mother with the maidens of Paradise (Hoor al-‘Ayn).
Hadith 505
عطاء بن ابی رباح رحمہ اللہ سے روایت ہے کہ سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے مجھ سے فرمایا: کیا میں تمہیں ایک جنتی عورت دکھاؤں؟ میں نے عرض کیا: کیوں نہیں۔ سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے فرمایا: یہ سیاہ فام عورت نبی صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوئی اور عرض کیا: مجھے بے ہوشی کا دورہ پڑتا ہے اور میں بے لباس ہو جاتی ہوں، لہٰذا میرے لیے اللہ تعالیٰ سے دعا کریں۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”اگر تم چاہو تو صبر کرو، اس کے بدلے میں تیرے لیے جنت ہے، اور اگر چاہو تو الله تعالیٰ سے تمہارے لیے عافیت کی دعا کرتا ہوں۔“ اس نے عرض کیا: میں صبر کرتی ہوں، پھر کہا: میرے کپڑے اتر جاتے ہیں، لہٰذا اللہ سے دعا فرمائیں کہ کپڑے نہ اترا کریں، تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اس کے لیے یہ دعا فرمائی۔
It is narrated from Ata bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to me: "Shall I show you a woman of Paradise?" I said: "Why not." Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "This black woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: 'I have fits of epilepsy and I become uncovered, so please pray to Allah for me.' The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'If you wish, be patient and Paradise will be yours, and if you wish, I will pray to Allah to grant you well-being.' She said: 'I will be patient,' then she said: 'But I become uncovered, so please pray to Allah that I do not become uncovered.' So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed for her."
Hadith 506
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلامٍ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا مَخْلَدٌ ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنِي عَطَاءٌ ، أَنَّهُ رَأَى أُمَّ زُفَرَ ، تِلْكَ الْمَرْأَةُ ، طَوِيلَةً سَوْدَاءَ عَلَى سُلَّمِ الْكَعْبَةِ ، قَالَ : وَأَخْبَرَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي مُلَيْكَةَ ، أَنَّ الْقَاسِمَ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّ عَائِشَةَ أَخْبَرَتْهُ ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، كَانَ يَقُولُ : ”مَا أَصَابَ الْمُؤْمِنَ مِنْ شَوْكَةٍ فَمَا فَوْقَهَا ، فَهُوَ كَفَّارَةٌ.“
It is narrated from Ibn Jurayj (may Allah have mercy on him) that ‘Ata bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) informed me that he saw Sayyida Umm Zafar (may Allah be pleased with her) on the steps of the Ka‘bah; she was tall and her complexion was dark. It is narrated from Sayyida ‘A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say: “If a believer is pricked by a thorn or suffers anything less than that, it becomes an expiation for his sins.”
Hadith 507
حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرٌ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَوْهَبٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي عَمِّي عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَوْهَبٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ ، يَقُولُ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ”مَا مِنْ مُسْلِمٍ يُشَاكُ شَوْكَةً فِي الدُّنْيَا يَحْتَسِبُهَا ، إِلا قُصَّ بِهَا مِنْ خَطَايَاهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ.“
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whenever any Muslim is pricked by a thorn in this world and he hopes for reward for it, then on the Day of Resurrection, because of it, surely there will be a reduction in his sins."
Hadith 508
حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا الأَعْمَشُ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنِي ابوسُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : ”مَا مِنْ مُؤْمِنٍ وَلا مُؤْمِنَةٍ ، وَلا مُسْلِمٍ وَلا مَسْلَمَةٍ ، يَمْرَضُ مَرَضًا إِلا قَصَّ اللَّهُ بِهِ عَنْهُ مِنْ خَطَايَاهُ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "When any believing man or woman, or likewise any Muslim man or woman, is afflicted with any illness, Allah Almighty certainly reduces his or her sins through it."
