Chapter: Expiation for the Sick
Hadith 491
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ الْعَلاءِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَالِمٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ الزُّبَيْدِيِّ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمان بْنُ عَامِرٍ ، أَنَّ غُطَيْفَ بْنَ الْحَارِثِ أَخْبَرَهُ ، أَنَّ رَجُلا أَتَى أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ ، وَهُوَ وَجِعٌ ، فَقَالَ : كَيْفَ أَمْسَى أَجْرُ الأَمِيرِ ؟ فَقَالَ : هَلْ تَدْرُونَ فِيمَا تُؤْجَرُونَ بِهِ ؟ فَقَالَ : بِمَا يُصِيبُنَا فِيمَا نَكْرَهُ ، فَقَالَ : إِنَّمَا تُؤْجَرُونَ بِمَا أَنْفَقْتُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، وَاسْتُنْفِقَ لَكُمْ ، ثُمَّ عَدَّ أَدَاةَ الرَّحْلِ كُلَّهَا حَتَّى بَلَغَ عِذَارَ الْبِرْذَوْنِ ، وَلَكِنَّ هَذَا الْوَصَبَ الَّذِي يُصِيبُكُمْ فِي أَجْسَادِكُمْ يُكَفِّرُ اللَّهُ بِهِ مِنْ خَطَايَاكُمْ .
It is narrated from Ghutayf bin Harith (may Allah have mercy on him), he reported that a man came to Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah bin Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) during his illness and asked: At what level is the reward and merit of the leader? He replied: Do you know for which things you are given reward? The man said: We are rewarded for the things that are unpleasant to us. Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You are rewarded for what you spend in the way of Allah and for what is spent on you. Then he counted all the equipment of the saddle, even counting the bridle of the horse (that there is reward in that too). But as for the hardship that reaches your bodies, through it Allah the Exalted wipes away your sins.
Hadith 492
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَلْحَلَةَ ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ ، وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : ”مَا يُصِيبُ الْمُسْلِمَ مِنْ نَصَبٍ ، وَلا وَصَبٍ ، وَلاهَمٍّ ، وَلا حَزَنٍ ، وَلا أَذًى ، وَلا غَمٍّ ، حَتَّى الشَّوْكَةُ يُشَاكُهَا ، إِلا كَفَّرَ اللَّهُ بِهَا مِنْ خَطَايَاهُ .“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri and Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whatever distress, anxiety, sorrow, grief, or pain befalls a Muslim, even if a thorn pricks him, Allah certainly forgives his sins in exchange for it."
Hadith 493
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَىٰ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُوعَوَانَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : كُنْتُ مَعَ سَلْمَانَ ، وَعَادَ مَرِيضًا فِي كِنْدَةَ ، فَلَمَّا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ ، قَالَ : أَبْشِرْ ، فَإِنَّ مَرَضَ الْمُؤْمِنِ يَجْعَلُهُ اللَّهُ لَهُ كَفَّارَةً وَمُسْتَعْتَبًا ، وَإِنَّ مَرَضَ الْفَاجِرِ كَالْبَعِيرِ عَقَلَهُ أَهْلُهُ ، ثُمَّ أَرْسَلُوهُ ، فَلَا يَدْرِي لِمَ عُقِلَ وَلِمَ أُرْسِلَ.
It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Saeed, who narrates from his father, that I was with Sayyiduna Salman al-Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him). He visited a sick person in Kindah. When he came to the patient, he said to him: Rejoice, for indeed the illness of a believer, Allah the Exalted makes it an expiation for his sins and a means of attaining the pleasure of Allah. And the illness of a sinful, wicked person is like a camel which its family has tied up, then released; it does not know why it was tied up nor why it was released.
Hadith 494
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ ، قَالَ : أَخْبَرَنَا عَدِيُّ بْنُ عَدِيٍّ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ :” لَا يَزَالُ الْبَلاءُ بِالْمُؤْمِنِ وَالْمُؤْمِنَةِ ، فِي جَسَدِهِ وَأَهْلِهِ وَمَالِهِ ، حَتَّى يَلْقَى اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَمَا عَلَيْهِ خَطِيئَةٌ.“ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو مِثْلَهُ ، وَزَادَ : ”فِي وَلَدِهِ .“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "A believing man and a believing woman continue to be afflicted in their body, their family, and their wealth, until they meet Allah and there is no sin left upon them." In one narration, children are also mentioned along with family.
Hadith 495
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ يُونُسَ ، قَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا ابوبَكْرٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : جَاءَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ”هَلْ أَخَذَتْكَ أُمُّ مِلْدَمٍ؟“ قَالَ : وَمَا أُمُّ مِلْدَمٍ؟ قَالَ : ”حَرٌّ بَيْنَ الْجِلْدِ وَاللَّحْمِ“، قَالَ : لَا ، قَالَ : ”فَهَلْ صُدِعْتَ؟“ قَالَ : وَمَا الصُّدَاعُ ؟ قَالَ : ”رِيحٌ تَعْتَرِضُ فِي الرَّأْسِ ، تَضْرِبُ الْعُرُوقَ“، قَالَ : لَا ، قَالَ : فَلَمَّا قَامَ ، قَالَ : ”مَنْ سَرَّهُ أَنْ يَنْظُرَ إِلَى رَجُلٍ مِنْ أَهْلِ النَّارِ “، أَيْ : فَلْيَنْظُرْهُ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a (healthy) Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Have you ever had a fever?" He asked: What is fever? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is heat that develops between the skin and the flesh." He said: No. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Have you ever had a headache?" He said: What is a headache? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is a wind that enters the head and strikes the veins." He said: No. The narrator says that when he got up and left, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever wishes to see a person of the people of Hell, let him look at this one."
