Chapter: Supplicating Allah for Good Character
Hadith 307
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلامٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ الْفَزَارِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ زِيَادِ بْنِ أَنْعُمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ رَافِعٍ التَّنُوخِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُكْثِرُ أَنْ يَدْعُوَ: ”اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الصِّحَّةَ، وَالْعِفَّةَ، وَالأَمَانَةَ، وَحُسْنَ الْخُلُقِ، وَالرِّضَا بِالْقَدَرِ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to frequently make this supplication: «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الصِّحَّةَ وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْأَمَانَةَ وَحُسْنَ الْخُلُقِ وَالرِّضَا بِالْقَدَرِ» "O Allah! I ask You for health, chastity, trustworthiness, and good character, and I beseech You to grant me contentment with destiny."
Hadith 308
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ السَّلامِ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرٌ، عَنْ أَبِي عِمْرَانَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ بَابَنُوسَ قَالَ: دَخَلْنَا عَلَى عَائِشَةَ فَقُلْنَا: يَا أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، مَا كَانَ خُلُقُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟ قَالَتْ: كَانَ خُلُقُهُ الْقُرْآنَ، تَقْرَؤُونَ سُورَةَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ؟ قَالَتِ: اقْرَأْ: ﴿قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ﴾ [المؤمنون: 1]، قَالَ يَزِيدُ: فَقَرَأْتُ: ﴿قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ﴾ إِلَى ﴿لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ﴾ [المؤمنون: 1-5]، قَالَتْ: هَكَذَا كَانَ خُلُقُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.
It is narrated from Yazid bin Babnoos that we presented ourselves before Umm al-Mu'mineen, Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and asked: Umm al-Mu'mineen! What was the character of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? She replied: The character of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the Qur'an. Have you read Surah Al-Mu’minun? Then she said: Recite! "Certainly, the believers have succeeded." Yazid says, I recited from «﴿قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ﴾» to «﴿حَافِظُونَ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ﴾» [المؤمنون: 1-5]. She said: This was the character of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
