بَابُ حُسْنِ الْخُلُقِ
Chapter: Good Character
Hadith 270M
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ أَبِي بَرْزَةَ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَطَاءَ الْكَيْخَارَانِيَّ عَنْ أُمِّ الدَّرْدَاءِ عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّی اللہُ عَلَیْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ”مَا مِنْ شَيْءٍ فِي الْمِیْزَانِ أَثْقَلُ مِنْ حُسْنِ الْخُلُقِ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him), who reports from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he said: “On the Day of Judgment, nothing will be heavier in the scale than good character.”
Hadith 271
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ: لَمْ يَكُنِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَاحِشًا وَلاَ مُتَفَحِّشًا، وَكَانَ يَقُولُ: ”خِيَارُكُمْ أَحَاسِنُكُمْ أَخْلاَقًا.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was neither indecent in speech nor did he speak indecently deliberately. Rather, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say: "The best among you are those who have the best character."
Hadith 272
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي اللَّيْثُ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ الْهَادِ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ”أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِأَحَبِّكُمْ إِلَيَّ، وَأَقْرَبِكُمْ مِنِّي مَجْلِسًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ؟“ فَسَكَتَ الْقَوْمُ، فَأَعَادَهَا مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلاَثًا، قَالَ الْقَوْمُ: نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قَالَ: ”أَحْسَنُكُمْ خُلُقًا.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: "Shall I not tell you about the person who is the most beloved to me among you and who will be the closest to me in assembly among you on the Day of Resurrection?" The people remained silent. The Prophet (peace be upon him) repeated his statement two or three times. The people said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The one among you who has the best character."
Hadith 273
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي أُوَيْسٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَجْلاَنَ، عَنِ الْقَعْقَاعِ بْنِ حَكِيمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ السَّمَّانِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: ”إِنَّمَا بُعِثْتُ لِأُتَمِّمَ صَالِحَ الأَخْلاقِ.“
Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "I have been sent only to perfect good character."
Hadith 274
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ: مَا خُيِّرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَيْنَ أَمْرَيْنِ إِلاَّ اخْتَارَ أَيْسَرَهُمَا، مَا لَمْ يَكُنْ إِثْمًا، فَإِذَا كَانَ إِثْمًا كَانَ أَبْعَدَ النَّاسِ مِنْهُ، وَمَا انْتَقَمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِنَفْسِهِ، إِلاَّ أَنْ تُنْتَهَكَ حُرْمَةُ اللهِ تَعَالَى، فَيَنْتَقِمُ لِلَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ بِهَا.
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says that whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was given a choice between two matters, he would choose the easier of the two, as long as it was not sinful. If it was a sinful matter, then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would be the farthest from it. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) never took revenge for himself, except when the sanctity of Allah was violated, then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would take revenge for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
Hadith 275
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ زُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ مُرَّةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ: إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى قَسَمَ بَيْنَكُمْ أَخْلاَقَكُمْ، كَمَا قَسَمَ بَيْنَكُمْ أَرْزَاقَكُمْ، وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى يُعْطِي الْمَالَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ وَمَنْ لاَ يُحِبُّ، وَلاَ يُعْطِي الإِيمَانَ إِلاَّ مَنْ يُحِبُّ، فَمَنْ ضَنَّ بِالْمَالِ أَنْ يُنْفِقَهُ، وَخَافَ الْعَدُوَّ أَنْ يُجَاهِدَهُ، وَهَابَ اللَّيْلَ أَنْ يُكَابِدَهُ، فَلْيُكْثِرْ مِنْ قَوْلِ: لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ، وَسُبْحَانَ اللهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that indeed Allah Almighty has distributed good character among you just as He has distributed sustenance among you. Surely, Allah gives wealth to the one He likes and to the one He does not like, but He gives faith only to the one He loves. Whoever is miserly in spending wealth, fears to fight the enemy, and does not have the strength to endure hardship by standing in prayer at night, he should frequently recite: La ilaha illallah, Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar.
