It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Charity is due from every Muslim (every day)." He asked: What if he does not find (anything to give)? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "He should work with his hands, benefit himself from it, and also give charity." He asked: What if he is not able to do that or cannot do so? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "He should help the one who is helpless and needy." He asked: What if he is unable to do even that? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "He should enjoin good." He submitted: What if he cannot do even that? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "He should refrain from harming people; this too is charity for him."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): Which deed is the best? He (peace be upon him) said: “To have faith in Allah and to strive in His path.” He asked: Which slave (to free) is the best? He (peace be upon him) said: “The one who is the most valuable in price and most esteemed in the eyes of his owners.” He said: What if I am unable to do that? He (peace be upon him) said: “Then help someone who is helpless or do some work for someone who is incapable.” He said: What if I am not able to do even that? He (peace be upon him) said: “Then keep people safe from your evil, for that will be a charity from you upon yourself.”
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: It was said: O Messenger of Allah! The wealthy have taken all the reward and merit; they pray as we pray, and they fast as we fast, and they give charity from their surplus wealth. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Has Allah not made for you that which you can give as charity? For every ‘Subhan Allah’ and ‘Alhamdulillah’ you say, there is the reward of charity, and your intimacy with your wife is also charity.” It was asked: Is there charity even in fulfilling one’s desire? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “If he fulfills it in a forbidden way, is there not sin upon him? In the same way, if he fulfills it in a lawful way, there is reward for him.”
