It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him) that he used to say to the people: “We know you better than animal healers know animals. We know those among you who are good and those among you who are bad. Your good people are those from whom good is expected and from whose evil people are safe. And the bad ones are those from whom no good is expected and from whose evil there is no safety, and even their freed slave is not truly free.”

It is narrated from Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man ordered his slave to bring water on his camel, but the slave fell asleep (and did not bring the water). So the man brought a flame of fire and put it on the slave’s face. The slave (in panic, ran and) fell into a well. When morning came, he went to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) (and explained the situation). When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw his face, he set him free.
