Narrated from Sayyiduna Miqdad bin Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked his companions about the (seriousness) of adultery. They said: It is forbidden; Allah Almighty and His Messenger have declared it forbidden. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If a man commits adultery with ten women, it is not as grave a sin as committing adultery with the wife of his neighbor." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked them about theft. They said: Theft is forbidden; Allah the Exalted and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) have declared it forbidden. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If a man steals from ten houses, it is less severe than stealing from the house of his neighbor (and its sin is greater)."
