بَابُ هَلْ يَقُولُ الْمَوْلَى: إِنِّي مِنْ فُلانٍ؟
Chapter: Should a Freed Slave Say: I Am from So-and-so?
Hadith 74
حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا وَائِلُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ اللَّيْثِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ قَالَ: قَالَ لِي عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ: مِمَّنْ أَنْتَ؟ قُلْتُ: مِنْ تَيْمِ تَمِيمٍ، قَالَ: مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ أَوْ مِنْ مَوَالِيهِمْ؟ قُلْتُ: مِنْ مَوَالِيهِمْ، قَالَ: فَهَلاَّ قُلْتَ: مِنْ مَوَالِيهِمْ إِذًا؟.
Abdur Rahman bin Habib reports that Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked me: "Which family are you from?" I said: "From the Taym branch of the Banu Tamim tribe." He asked: "From them themselves or from their freed slaves?" I replied: "From their freed slaves." Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Why did you not say that I am a freed slave of theirs (Banu Tamim)?"
