Hadith 989

حَدَّثَنَا شِهَابٌ، قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ‏:‏ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ‏:‏ ”إِنَّ السَّلامَ اسْمٌ مِنْ أَسْمَاءِ اللهِ تَعَالَى، وَضَعَهُ اللَّهُ فِي الأَرْضِ، فَأَفْشُوا السَّلامَ بَيْنَكُمْ‏.‏“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “«السلام» is one of the names of Allah Almighty, which Allah has placed on the earth, so make salam common among yourselves.”

The meaning of "salam" is peace and gift. And it is also one of the names of Allah, the Exalted. When it is the name of Allah, the Exalted, its meaning will be: free from all kinds of defects and shortcomings.
