Hadith 954

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that I asked my close friend, Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: I brought water for ablution to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he moved his blessed head and pressed his lips between his teeth. I said: May my parents be sacrificed for you, have I caused you distress? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, but you will see such rulers or leaders who will delay the prayer from its proper time." I asked: So what do you command me to do? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You should perform the prayer at its proper time, and then if you find the prayer being performed with them, perform it as well, and do not say that I have already performed the prayer, therefore I will not perform it."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
From this, it is understood that expressing amazement in this manner is not contrary to good manners. Also, performing the prayer at its earliest time is recommended (mustahabb), and if the imam excessively delays the prayer, one should perform the prayer separately at its proper time. However, if there is fear of discord (fitnah), then one may also perform it later with the imam, and in that case, it will be considered as a voluntary prayer (nafl).
