Hadith 948

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) became ill, so we prayed behind him while he was sitting, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was conveying the takbirs of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to the people. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned and saw that we were praying standing. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gestured to us to sit, so we sat down, and then we performed the prayer sitting, following him (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) finished the prayer with salam, he said: "Do not start doing as the Persians and Romans do, for they stand before their kings while their kings remain seated. Do not do so. Follow your imams. If the imam prays standing, then you should also pray standing, and if he prays sitting, then you should also pray sitting."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ If the imam leads the prayer sitting, then you should also pray sitting; this was the earlier ruling. In the final illness of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), he led the prayer sitting while the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) were standing. From this, it is understood that this ruling is not obligatory. There is allowance for both ways.

➋ From this, it is understood that the method of the so-called spiritual guides (pirs) in the present age is purely ignorant: they themselves remain seated while their disciples stand, or the pir sits on a cot while the disciples sit below on the ground.
