Hadith 947

Narrated from Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says: I have not seen anyone among the people, in speech, manner, and way of sitting and standing, more resembling the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) than Sayyida Fatima (may Allah be pleased with her). Whenever the Prophet (peace be upon him) saw her coming, he would welcome her, stand up towards her, kiss her, take her by the hand, and seat her in his place. And when the Prophet (peace be upon him) went to her, she would welcome him, stand up towards him, and kiss him. Once, during the illness of the Prophet (peace be upon him) before his death, she came to him, and he welcomed her, kissed her, and spoke to her privately, so she began to weep. Then he whispered to her again, and she laughed. I said to the women: I see this woman superior to other women. She is just one of the women, yet she was just crying and then started laughing. So I asked her: What did the Prophet (peace be upon him) say to you? She replied: Then I would be revealing a secret (if I told you). When the Prophet (peace be upon him) passed away, she told (me): The Prophet (peace be upon him) whispered to me, saying: “I am going to die (in this illness).” Upon hearing this, I wept. Then he whispered to me a second time and said: “You will be the first of my family to join me.” At this, I became happy and this pleased me.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this hadith, it is understood that it is permissible to rise from one’s place and advance forward to welcome someone, and to seat them on the cushion (masnad).
➋ A father may kiss his adult and married daughter; it is also understood that honoring and respecting daughters and treating them with love and affection is a Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
➌ This hadith demonstrates the virtue of Sayyidah Fatimah al-Zahra (radi Allahu anha).
➍ It is a special characteristic of the Prophets (alayhim as-salam) that they are informed of their death beforehand, and the Angel of Death is instructed to formally seek their permission.
➎ From this, it is understood that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has passed away, and to hold the belief of his worldly life is contrary to the Qur’an and Sunnah. As for the life of al-Barzakh, that is certain, but we do not comprehend the reality of that realm, nor can our intellect reach it.
➏ The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was informed about the deaths of many Companions and close relatives, which is among his miracles.
