Hadith 946

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), he says that there was no one more beloved to the Companions than the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and when they saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) coming, they would not stand up for him, because they knew that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) disliked it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was more deserving of honor and respect than all other human beings, and he was also extremely far removed from arrogance. Despite this, the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) would not stand up for him, because he disliked it. So how can it be permissible to do this for anyone else?
➋ In the present era, for everyone to stand up upon the arrival of a teacher or any prominent person is impermissible. Going forward to shake hands is a different matter, but standing in one’s place out of respect is not permissible. Similarly, the manner of salute that is prevalent in the military or other institutions is also blind imitation of the British, which must be avoided. The Prophetic instruction is:
“Whoever likes that people stand up for him out of reverence, let him take his place in the Fire.” (Sahih al-Targhib wa’l-Tarhib, Hadith: 271)
