Hadith 945

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that some people accepted the judgment of Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), so he sent for them, and they came riding on a donkey. When they approached the mosque, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Go to your best or your chief (and bring him into the mosque)." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Sa'd! These people have submitted to your judgment." Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "My judgment concerning them is that their fighting men be killed and their women and children be taken as captives." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "You have judged according to Allah's will." Or he said: "You have judged according to the command of the Sovereign of the dominion."

Benefits and Issues:
➊ From these narrations, it is understood that it is permissible to get up and move forward to meet someone, to shake hands with him, or if he is ill, to help him dismount from his ride, or to move forward to offer condolences to someone afflicted by a calamity. However, it is not permissible to stand up in one’s place as a form of honoring someone, as will be made clear in the following hadith.
➋ It is recommended (mustahabb) to congratulate someone upon receiving happiness or a blessing.
