بَابُ كَيْفَ تَشْمِيتُ مَنْ سَمِعَ الْعَطْسَةَChapter: How to respond to someone who hears a sneeze
Hadith 930

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا يَعْلَى، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُنَيْنٍ وَهُوَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ كَيْسَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: كُنَّا جُلُوسًا عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ”يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ“، ثُمَّ عَطَسَ آخَرُ، فَلَمْ يَقُلْ لَهُ شَيْئًا، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، رَدَدْتَ عَلَى الْآخَرِ، وَلَمْ تَقُلْ لِي شَيْئًا؟ قَالَ: ”إِنَّهُ حَمِدَ اللَّهَ، وَسَكَتَّ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when a man sneezed and said «الحمد للہ», so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him «يرحمك الله». Then another man sneezed, but the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not say anything to him. So he said: O Messenger of Allah! You replied to him but you did not reply to me when I sneezed. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "He praised Allah and you remained silent."

Benefits and Issues:
From this it is understood that one who does not say "Alhamdulillah" at the time of sneezing should not be told "Yarhamukallah," because by not saying "Alhamdulillah," he himself has forfeited his right.
