Hadith 929

It is narrated from Abu Jamrah (may Allah have mercy on him) that I heard Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) saying in response to a sneeze: «عافانا الله وإياكم من النار، يرحمكم الله». May Allah save us and you from the Fire, and may Allah have mercy on you.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
There is no support for this statement of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) from any authentic marfu‘ narration; therefore, it is better to suffice with the prescribed (masnun) response. It is likely that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) did not always say these words. Furthermore, it is established from Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) that he forbade a person who had said “Alhamdulillah wa as-salamu ‘ala Rasulillah.”
