بَابُ تَشْمِيتِ الْعَاطِسِChapter: Responding to the sneezer
Hadith 922
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلامٍ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا الْفَزَارِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ زِيَادِ بْنِ أَنْعُمٍ الإِفْرِيقِيِّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا غُزَاةً فِي الْبَحْرِ زَمَنَ مُعَاوِيَةَ، فَانْضَمَّ مَرْكَبُنَا إِلَى مَرْكَبِ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ الأَنْصَارِيِّ، فَلَمَّا حَضَرَ غَدَاؤُنَا أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْهِ، فَأَتَانَا فَقَالَ: دَعَوْتُمُونِي وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ، فَلَمْ يَكُنْ لِي بُدٌّ مِنْ أَنْ أُجِيبَكُمْ، لأَنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: ”إِنَّ لِلْمُسْلِمِ عَلَى أَخِيهِ سِتَّ خِصَالٍ وَاجِبَةٍ، إِنْ تَرَكَ مِنْهَا شَيْئًا فَقَدْ تَرَكَ حَقًّا وَاجِبًا لأَخِيهِ عَلَيْهِ: يُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْهِ إِذَا لَقِيَهُ، وَيُجِيبُهُ إِذَا دَعَاهُ، وَيُشَمِّتُهُ إِذَا عَطَسَ، وَيَعُودُهُ إِذَا مَرِضَ، وَيَحْضُرُهُ إِذَا مَاتَ، وَيَنْصَحُهُ إِذَا اسْتَنْصَحَهُ“، قَالَ: وَكَانَ مَعَنَا رَجُلٌ مَزَّاحٌ، يَقُولُ لِرَجُلٍ أَصَابَ طَعَامَنَا: جَزَاكَ اللَّهُ خَيْرًا وَبِرًّا، فَغَضِبَ عَلَيْهِ حِينَ أَكْثَرَ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ لأَبِي أَيُّوبَ: مَا تَرَى فِي رَجُلٍ إِذَا قُلْتُ لَهُ: جَزَاكَ اللَّهُ خَيْرًا وَبِرًّا، غَضِبَ وَشَتَمَنِي؟ فَقَالَ أَبُو أَيُّوبَ: إِنَّا كُنَّا نَقُولُ: إِنَّ مَنْ لَمْ يُصْلِحْهُ الْخَيْرُ أَصْلَحْهُ الشَّرُّ، فَاقْلِبْ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ حِينَ أَتَاهُ: جَزَاكَ اللَّهُ شَرًّا وَعَرًّا، فَضَحِكَ وَرَضِيَ، وَقَالَ: مَا تَدَعُ مُزَاحَكَ، فَقَالَ الرَّجُلُ: جَزَى اللَّهُ أَبَا أَيُّوبَ الأَنْصَارِيَّ خَيْرًا.
It is narrated from Ziyad bin An'am Al-Ifriqi (may Allah have mercy on him) that during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), he participated in a naval expedition, and our boat met with the boat of Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). When it was time for our meal, we invited him to eat with us, so he came and said: "You have invited me while I am fasting, and I have no choice but to accept your invitation, because I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'A Muslim has six rights over another Muslim. If he neglects any of them, he has neglected a duty that was due to his brother. When he meets him, he should greet him with salam; when he invites him, he should accept his invitation; when he sneezes, he should respond to his sneeze; when he is ill, he should visit him; when he dies, he should attend his funeral; and when he seeks advice, he should give him sincere counsel.'"
The narrator says that there was a very humorous person with us. He said to one of the people eating with us: «جزاك الله خيرًا وبرًا», so when he joked excessively, that person became angry. This humorous person said to Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him): "You see, when I say «جزاك الله خيرًا وبرًا» to this person, he gets angry and speaks harshly." Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "We say that if goodness does not reform someone, then evil reforms him, so change the phrase." So when that man came to him, he said: «جزاك الله شرًا وعرًا» (May Allah reward you with evil and hardship), so he laughed and became pleased and said: "You will never stop joking." That man said: "May Allah reward Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) with goodness."
