It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Allah likes sneezing and dislikes yawning. When someone sneezes and says «الحمد للہ», it is the right of every Muslim who hears him to respond to his sneeze. As for yawning, it is purely from Satan, so one should try to stop it as much as possible. When a person yawns and says 'Ha', Satan laughs at him."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues: ➊ Among the mutual rights of Muslims is that when a person sneezes, and it is not due to a cold or any illness, and the one who sneezes says "alhamdulillah," then it is obligatory upon the listener to respond with "yarhamukallah." Thereafter, the one who sneezed should reply with "yahdikumullah wa yuslihu balakum." ➋ Yawning is a sign of laziness and indolence, which Allah Ta'ala dislikes. Therefore, one should try to prevent it as much as possible, and in one hadith, the method for this is mentioned: that one should place a hand over the mouth. Especially during prayer, one should make every effort to suppress it. ➌ If someone sneezes during prayer, he may say "alhamdulillah," because prayer itself is the name of glorification and praise. However, it is not permissible to respond to someone else's sneeze during prayer, because that is the speech of people, which is not allowed in prayer.
