Hadith 913

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he reports from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): (He said:) "There is no reality in contagious disease and bad omen, and I like taking a good omen, that is, hearing a good word and taking it as a good sign."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ No illness is inherently contagious; otherwise, who afflicted the first person with the disease? The transmission of germs is dependent upon the command of Allah Ta’ala; they do not possess this effect by themselves. At times, a person who stays with the sick remains safe, while someone distant becomes affected. However, to avoid superstitious doubts, it is commanded to stay away from such patients so that one’s creed is not corrupted.

➋ It is natural for a doubt to arise in the heart upon hearing something bad or an evil word; however, for a Muslim, it is impermissible to abandon one’s work because of this. On the other hand, taking a good omen from hearing a good word is a commendable matter, provided that the journey or work is lawful and permissible. If the journey is for disobedience or the work is unlawful, then that good word will be from Shaytan.
