Narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “During the days of Hajj, all the nations were presented before me (in a dream), and I was very pleased at the great number of my Ummah, which filled the desert and the mountains. The angels said: O Muhammad! Are you pleased? I said: Yes. O my Lord! Allah the Exalted said: Along with them there will be seventy thousand who will enter Paradise without reckoning, and they are those who do not ask for ruqyah (spiritual healing), do not cauterize themselves, do not take omens, and put their trust in their Lord.” Sayyiduna ‘Ukasha (may Allah be pleased with him) said: (O Messenger of Allah!) Pray to Allah that He makes me one of them. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “O Allah! Make him one of them.” Another man said: Pray for me too, that Allah makes me one of them. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Ukasha has preceded you in this matter.”

Through another chain, it is also narrated in a similar manner from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in marfu’ form.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The virtue of not taking bad omens is established from this hadith. It is also understood that just as carrying out good deeds is a cause of reward, similarly, refraining from sin is also a cause of reward.
➋ The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam made supplication for Sayyiduna ‘Ukasha radi Allahu anhu, and according to one narration, he specifically mentioned that he would certainly be among that group, whereas for the other companion, he did not make supplication. Various explanations have been given for this; the preferred view is that through revelation, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was granted permission to supplicate only for him. Moreover, if this had become a practice, then everyone would have requested supplication.
➌ It is recommended (mustahabb) to ask pious and righteous people for supplication, as Sayyiduna ‘Ukasha radi Allahu anhu did.
➍ Whoever performs ruqyah (spiritual healing) on himself, or someone performs ruqyah for him without his request, then, insha’Allah, he will not be excluded from this virtue. In Sahih Muslim, it is stated that “they do not perform ruqyah, nor do they have ruqyah performed for them.” (Sahih Muslim: 220) Imam Nawawi rahimahullah states that what is meant here is ruqyah that is other than that from the Qur’an and Sunnah.
➎ With the seventy thousand, for each thousand there will be another seventy thousand, and in addition, Allah ‘Azza wa Jall will add three “handfuls” as well. (Al-Sahihah by Al-Albani, Hadith: 2179) Allahumma, make us among them.
