Hadith 909

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ الْفَضْلُ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ، عَنْ عِيسَى بْنِ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ، قَالَ: قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ”الطِّيَرَةُ شِرْكٌ، وَمَا مِنَّا، وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ يُذْهِبُهُ بِالتَّوَكُّلِ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Evil omen is shirk, and each of us has apprehensions, but Allah Almighty removes it through reliance (tawakkul) upon Him."

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The people of the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah) held the belief that a good or bad omen would bring them benefit or harm, whereas the only possessor of benefit and harm is Allah Ta'ala. In effect, they made such things partners with Allah.
➋ If merely a suspicion arises in the heart, and a person does not pay heed to this suspicion, and continues his work by employing apparent means while placing his trust in Allah, then there is no harm in such a suspicion.
➌ When seeing clouds, one should only take an omen of rain, but since they are also a possible sign of punishment, it is necessary to seek refuge from the punishment of Allah as well.
