Hadith 903

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was at a funeral. He picked up something and began to scratch the ground with it and said: "The abode of each one of you in Paradise and Hell has been written." They said: O Messenger of Allah! Should we not rely on what has been written for us and give up action? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Continue to act, for everyone is facilitated for that for which he was created." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For those who are destined for happiness, the deeds of happiness are made easy, and for those who are wretched, the deeds of wretchedness are made easy." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: «فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَاتَّقَىٰ ۝ وَصَدَّقَ بِالْحُسْنَىٰ» [الليل: 5-6] So, as for he who gives and fears Allah and affirms the best...

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Apparently, this hadith has no direct connection with the chapter except that it mentions, in a meaningful way, the aspect of amazement. The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) said: “If this is the case, then should we also abandon actions?”
➋ This hadith is decisive regarding matters of divine decree (qadar), and it contains a refutation of misguided sects such as the Jabriyya and Qadariyya. It explains that a person should act upon the divine teachings according to revelation (wahy). For he has been made responsible for seeking means (asbab); if he adopts this method, the path to Paradise will be made easy for him. He is not a mere helpless being who has been forcibly set upon a path; rather, Allah Ta’ala has endowed him with intellect and understanding, sent prophets and messengers, revealed scriptures, and granted man the choice to act upon either good or evil. For example, in the matter of sustenance (rizq), Allah has decreed what each person will receive. Yet, no one sits idly by, thinking that whatever is destined for him will come to him; rather, he seeks out the means, adopts them, and leaves the outcome to Allah Ta’ala. In the same way, a person should perform good deeds and seek the means of forgiveness, and entrust the outcome to Allah Ta’ala.
