Hadith 899

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said: Whom do you consider to be honorable and noble? Allah Almighty has clarified what honor is. Thus, the most honorable among you in the sight of Allah is the one who is most pious. Whom do you count as noble? The one whose character is the best is the highest in honor and nobility.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues:
➊ These narrations show that kinship and family are merely for identification; the real criterion of honor is excellent character and piety (taqwa) and God-consciousness. The more complete these qualities are in a person, the more honorable he is. However, if some family virtue is combined with faith (iman), then it is like “gold adorned with jewels.”
➋ With Allah, decisions will be made on the basis of deeds, not on the basis of family, because everyone’s family is the same and the manner of coming into this world is also the same, so how can this be a cause of honor?
