بَابُ إِفْشَاءِ السِّرِّChapter: Disclosing Secrets
Hadith 886

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مُوسَى بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ قَالَ: عَجِبْتُ مِنَ الرَّجُلِ يَفِرُّ مِنَ الْقَدَرِ وَهُوَ مُوَاقِعُهُ، وَيَرَى الْقَذَاةَ فِي عَيْنِ أَخِيهِ وَيَدَعُ الْجِذْعَ فِي عَيْنِهِ، وَيُخْرِجُ الضَّغْنَ مِنْ نَفْسِ أَخِيهِ وَيَدَعُ الضَّغْنَ فِي نَفْسِهِ، وَمَا وَضَعْتُ سِرِّي عِنْدَ أَحَدٍ فَلُمْتُهُ عَلَى إِفْشَائِهِ، وَكَيْفَ أَلُومُهُ وَقَدْ ضِقْتُ بِهِ ذَرْعًا؟.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I am amazed at the person who tries to escape from destiny even though it is bound to befall him, and he can see the speck in his brother’s eye but does not see the beam in his own eye, and he wants to remove malice from his brother’s heart but leaves malice in his own heart. And I have never entrusted my secret to anyone and then blamed him for disclosing it. How can I blame him when I myself was too narrow-hearted to keep it safe?

Benefits and Issues:
The point is that if you want to keep your secret safe, then do not tell it to anyone. If you yourself are unable to safeguard your secret, then no one else will ever safeguard it for you. The second point mentioned is that a person does not see his own faults; he is always searching for the weaknesses of others, even though he himself is involved in even greater mistakes.
Similarly, guidance is given that if a person wants people to keep their hearts clean regarding him, then first and foremost he must keep his own heart clean regarding people.
