بَابُ الْمَعَارِيضِChapter: Ambiguous Speech
Hadith 885
حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الشِّخِّيرِ قَالَ: صَحِبْتُ عِمْرَانَ بْنَ حُصَيْنٍ إِلَى الْبَصْرَةِ، فَمَا أَتَى عَلَيْنَا يَوْمٌ إِلاَّ أَنْشَدْنَا فِيهِ الشِّعْرَ، وَقَالَ: إِنَّ فِي مَعَارِيضِ الْكَلاَمِ لَمَنْدُوحَةٌ عَنِ الْكَذِبِ.
It is narrated from Mutarrif bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him) that I traveled with Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) from Kufa to Basra. Every day, without fail, he would recite poetry to us and say: There is allowance to avoid lying in allusion (ta‘reed/tawriyah).
