بَابُ الْمَعَارِيضِChapter: Ambiguous Speech
Hadith 883

حَدَّثَنَا آدَمُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ ثَابِتٍ الْبُنَانِيِّ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَسِيرٍ لَهُ، فَحَدَا الْحَادِي، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ”ارْفُقْ يَا أَنْجَشَةُ وَيْحَكَ بِالْقَوَارِيرِ.“
Narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was on a journey when a camel driver recited poetry. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Woe to you, O Anjasha! Be gentle with the glass vessels."

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Ma‘arid (allusions) refers to such speech that can be understood in two ways; however, one meaning is apparent and commonly understood, while the other is intended. Its usage is common in Arabic speech. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) referred to women as “glass” because they too are easily affected. His purpose was to indicate that there are women in the caravan, and therefore there is a risk of falling into their temptation. Another meaning is that by singing the camel songs (huda), do not make the camels go too fast, because women are gentle in temperament like glass. They should not be subjected to excessive hardship, or they might fall off due to the speed of the mounts.
➋ If the purpose of ta‘reed (allusion) is to deceive someone, to reject the truth, or to slander someone, then it is impermissible.
