Hadith 882

It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'minin Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that some people asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about soothsayers. He (peace be upon him) said: "They are nothing, and they have no reality." The people said: O Messenger of Allah! They sometimes say something that turns out to be true. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "That true statement is a word which the devil snatches (from the conversation of the angels), and he whispers it into the ears of his friends as a hen clucks, then the soothsayer mixes with it more than a hundred lies."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said regarding soothsayers (kahin): "They are nothing," meaning that these people are not upon the truth, nor is their way correct. Imam Bukhari has mentioned this in the chapter heading.
➋ He also clarified the reality of the statements of soothsayers that turn out to be correct: in reality, it is a statement heard from the angels, which a devil snatches and throws into their ears. They mix it with a hundred lies to promote their trade, and ignorant people pay attention to the one correct statement while forgetting the ninety-nine lies.
➌ Going to a soothsayer is a major sin (kabirah). If a person goes to a soothsayer and affirms that his prediction is true, then he is a denier of the religion revealed to Muhammad sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Therefore, one should never destroy one's faith for the sake of a few hundred or thousand (in value).
