Hadith 88

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who says: One day I was present in the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) (and this was on the day when) only the Prophet (peace be upon him), myself, my mother, and my maternal aunt Umm Haram were present. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) came to us, he said: "Shall I not lead you in prayer?" And it was not the time for (obligatory) prayer. One of those present asked: Where did the Prophet (peace be upon him) make Anas stand? He said: He made him stand on his right side, then led us in prayer. Then he prayed for the household (and) supplicated for every good of this world and the Hereafter. My mother said: O Messenger of Allah! Your little servant, pray to Allah (especially) for him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) supplicated for every good (of this world and the Hereafter) for me. At the end of his supplication, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O Allah! Grant him abundant wealth and children, and bless him."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ In Sahih Bukhari (1982), it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam came to the house of Umm Sulaym radi Allahu anha (the mother of Anas), and she presented dates and clarified butter, but he said: “I am fasting.” Then he performed prayer in a corner of the house, other than the obligatory prayer... and supplicated for the household. From this, it is understood that if there are multiple women in the house and there is also an intelligent child, it is permissible for a respected elder to visit the house, provided there is no fear of temptation (fitnah), because here there is no mention of Abu Talhah radi Allahu anhu, who was the husband of Umm Sulaym, being present at home.

➋ When needed, it is permissible to establish congregational prayer (jama‘ah) in the house, especially for children and women; it is recommended (mustahabb) to establish congregation for them at home.

➌ When performing prayer in congregation, if there are two men and the rest are women, the two men will stand in the same row, and the women will stand behind them. Women cannot form rows with children, even if they are their own offspring.

➍ If people of virtue and elders visit the house, it is necessary to honor them and show hospitality to them. It is also permissible to request them to supplicate for oneself and one’s children.

➎ When someone, having good opinion of a religious scholar, requests him for supplication, he should supplicate with sincerity, just as the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did for Umm Sulaym radi Allahu anha and her household.

➏ “The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam went to the house of Umm Sulaym radi Allahu anha”—from this it is understood that the ruler of the time and influential scholars should visit the homes of their subjects and the common people so that they may be honored.

➐ Abundance of wealth and property is a blessing from Allah, provided a person does not become rebellious and arrogant. This is not contrary to the goodness of the Hereafter.

➑ The supplication made by the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam for Anas radi Allahu anhu was fulfilled word for word. Allah Almighty blessed the wealth of Anas radi Allahu anhu so much that, according to his own statement, his eldest daughter informed him that up to the period of governorship during the era of Hajjaj, more than one hundred and twenty individuals from his descendants had passed away. (Sharh Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad, Hadith: 65) Furthermore, Anas radi Allahu anhu used to say that he was the wealthiest among the Ansar.

The passing away of so many children is certainly a cause of charity and grief for a person, but as a result of patience over this, one can expect reward in the same measure. Moreover, in the Hereafter, they will be a means of protection from Hellfire and intercession. Therefore, despite so many children passing away, it is still a cause of blessing.

The number of children and grandchildren of Anas radi Allahu anhu during his lifetime exceeded one hundred. (Fath al-Bari, p. 229, v. 4)

➒ The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam made Anas radi Allahu anhu stand on his right side, from which it is understood, firstly, that if there is only one follower (muqtadi) with the imam, he should stand on the right side of the imam; secondly, it is understood that he should stand level with the imam, as is apparent from the wording of the text. If it were Sunnah to stand slightly behind, it would have been mentioned.
