It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that one night the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became restless and his sleep was disturbed. He (peace be upon him) said: "If only some righteous man from among my companions would come and stand guard for me." Suddenly, we heard the sound of weapons, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: "Who is it?" He replied: Sa'd. Then Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! I have come to stand guard for you. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) slept peacefully until we heard the sound of his snoring.

Hadith Takhrij«صحيح : أخرجه البخاري ، كتاب التمني ، باب قوله صلى الله عليه وسلم ليت كذا و كذا : 7231 و مسلم : 2410 و الترمذي : 3756»
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ In one narration, it is stated that the word "if" (law) opens the door of Satan, meaning, "If only this had happened, then such and such would not have occurred." Imam Bukhari wants to clarify here that not every kind of wish or longing is blameworthy; rather, only that longing is blameworthy in which there is an expression of displeasure with divine decree (qadar). Wishing for good things related to the future, or expressing regret over having committed a sin in the past, is permissible.
➋ This incident took place immediately after the migration to Madinah, at a time when there was a threat from the Jews or an attack from the polytheists of Makkah. Later, when Allah, the Exalted, took the responsibility of protecting you, that He would protect you from the people, then you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) stopped appointing guards.
➌ Utilizing means and resources is not contrary to reliance upon Allah (tawakkul); otherwise, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would not have desired or implemented the arrangement of guards.
