Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: The meaning of the hadith is that making poetry a profession and spending excessive time on it is impermissible. However, if one has a taste for good poetry alongside acquiring Islamic knowledge, reading the Qur’an and hadith, and does not waste time in it, then it is permissible. In the present era, the practice of reciting praise (hamd and na‘at) to the tune of music and its various instruments is not from the Merciful (Rahmani) but from Satan (Shaytani). Furthermore, in the sight of the Shari‘ah, the appearance and dress of such poets are no less accursed than their poetry and dress. May Allah protect us from it.
