Hadith 866

Narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she used to say: There are good poems and bad poems. Take the good poems and leave the bad ones. I have narrated many poems from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). Among them is a qasida which contains forty verses, and there are others as well.

Benefits and Issues:
The meaning of these hadiths is that poetry, in itself, is a form of speech through which what is in the heart is expressed; the only difference is that it is composed in rhyme. If there is no religious flaw in it, then it is good; otherwise, it is bad. The same is the case with speech: no matter how beautiful it may be, if it deviates from the Shariah and the truth, it will be considered reprehensible. However, excessive and abundant poetry is blameworthy, as has already been mentioned in the previous pages.
