Hadith 860

Narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "For a man to have his belly filled with pus that corrodes his insides is better for him than to have his belly filled with poetry."

Benefits and Issues:
The meaning of this hadith is that although reciting and memorizing good poetry is permissible, making it a preoccupation in such a way that a person becomes distant from the teachings of the Qur’an and Hadith and the remembrance of Allah is not permissible, even if the poetry is good. Even poetry that is based on wisdom should be within limits, because nothing surpasses the Qur’an and Hadith. Exceeding the limits is not liked by Allah and His Messenger.
