Hadith 855

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin Al-Aas (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: When there are many friends, there are also many claimants. Yahya bin Ayyub (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Musa: What is the meaning of claimants? He said: Rights.

Benefits and Issues:
In the first hadith, wallahu a‘lam, the intended point is to show that the proper etiquette when accompanying elders is to obey what they say, and if they command someone to mount (an animal or vehicle), then that command should be carried out.

The meaning of the second hadith is that when a person has many friends, his expenses also increase, and so do the rights (owed to others). Therefore, a person faces difficulty in fulfilling these rights—whom should he give to, and whom should he deprive? In this situation, he should give precedence to elders and people of knowledge and virtue. In this way, his issue will be resolved.
