Hadith 853

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was in our, that is, Sayyiduna Abu Talha's (may Allah be pleased with him) date orchard. The Prophet (peace be upon him) went out to relieve himself, and Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) also followed behind out of respect for him, but avoided walking directly with him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) passed by a grave and stopped there until Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) also suddenly arrived there. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: "Woe to you, O Bilal! Do you hear what I am hearing?" Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I do not hear anything." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The occupant of this grave is being punished." Then it was found out that it was the grave of a Jew.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues:
➊ From this, it is understood that when walking with elders, one should observe proper etiquette and walk behind them. One should avoid walking ahead of them or alongside them.
➋ This affirms the punishment of the grave, and it is also understood that the punishment occurs in the very grave of this world. Denying this is tantamount to denying the ahadith of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). In one hadith, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "If it were not for the fact that you would stop burying your dead, I would have asked Allah to let you hear the punishment of the grave which I hear." (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2867)
