It is narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Abu Na’m, he says: I was present with Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). A man asked: What is the ruling on killing a mosquito (is it permissible or not)? Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: Where are you from? He replied: From Iraq. Then Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: Look at him! He asks about the permissibility of killing a mosquito, while they martyred the beloved child of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (and did not care at all). I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: “They both (Hasan and Husayn, may Allah be pleased with them) are my flowers in this world.”

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ One should sit in the gatherings of the people of knowledge. This increases religious knowledge and grants the ability for self-reformation. It is reported about Abdur Rahman bin Abu Nu’m that he was so devoted in worship that if he were told, “You will die tomorrow,” he would not be able to increase his deeds any further.
➋ Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma asked that person, “Where are you from?” because the people of Kufa were known even in that era for asking such unnecessary questions. Later as well, it remained a center of tribulations, and the people of opinion (Ahl al-Ra’y) originated from there.
➌ The people of Kufa have been known for deceitfulness from the very beginning. They became the cause of the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu. They martyred Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu and were at the forefront of the tribulation that arose, to the extent that after martyring Sayyiduna Husayn radi Allahu anhu and his family, they themselves began to wail and lament. Apparently, that person wanted to impress others with his piety and God-consciousness so that people would say how cautious he is. Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma understood him well and rebuked him thoroughly, saying: You did not feel the slightest shame in martyring the grandson of the Messenger, and now you are asking about the ruling of killing a mosquito.
➍ The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had great love for Sayyiduna Hasan and Husayn radi Allahu anhuma. Perhaps the reason for this was that the male offspring of his other daughters did not survive, and those daughters passed away during his lifetime. Since children are a source of comfort, and a person feels tranquility by loving and cherishing them just as flowers and fragrance provide comfort to a person, children have thus been likened to flowers.
The questioner had asked regarding the ruling of killing a mosquito while in the state of ihram during the sacred months. (Bukhari: 3753)
