Hadith 849

حَدَّثَنَا عَارِمٌ، قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ الأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ قَالَ‏:‏ كَنَّانِي عَبْدُ اللهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُولَدَ لِي‏.‏
It is narrated from Ibrahim Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him), he says that Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Before I had children, Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) gave me a kunyah (patronymic name).

Benefits and Issues:
From this, it is understood that it is permissible to adopt a kunyah (teknonym) even before the birth of children. It is not necessary that only a person who has children may have a kunyah; rather, a childless person may also adopt a kunyah.
