Hadith 847

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to come to us, and I had a younger brother whose nickname was Abu Umair. He had a pet nightingale with which he used to play, but it died. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came and saw him upset. He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked, "What is the matter with him?" It was said to him, "His nightingale has died." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "O Abu Umair! What happened to your nightingale? It has left you."

From this, it is understood that a child may also be given a kunyah (teknonym). Furthermore, it is also evident from this the compassion and humility of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), that he would engage in such playful interaction even with children.
