It is narrated from Sayyiduna Usama bin Zaid (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) arrived at a gathering where Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul was also present. And this incident took place before Abdullah bin Ubayy had expressed Islam. He said: "Do not cause us discomfort in our gatherings." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went to Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said to him: "O Sa'd! Did you not hear what Abu Hubab said?" By this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) meant Abdullah bin Ubayy bin Salul.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ Among the Arabs, when they wished to address someone with honor and respect, they would mention his kunyah (patronymic) instead of his name. This raises the question of whether it is permissible to address a polytheist in this manner. Imam Bukhari rahimahullah wishes to clarify that if a polytheist is well-known by his kunyah, then he may be addressed with his kunyah. ➋ When the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam informed our master Sa’d radi Allahu anhu about Abdullah bin Ubayy, he said: O Messenger of Allah! Pardon him, for before your arrival, the people of Madinah wished to crown him as their chief, but your arrival prevented this, which has caused him distress. You sallallahu alayhi wa sallam pardoned him.
