بَابُ اسْمِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَكُنْيَتِهِChapter: The Name and Kunya of the Prophet ﷺ
Hadith 842
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ: وُلِدَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنَّا غُلاَمٌ فَسَمَّاهُ الْقَاسِمَ، فَقَالَتِ الأَنْصَارُ: لَا نُكَنِّيكَ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ، وَلَا نُنْعِمُكَ عَيْنًا، فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ لَهُ: مَا قَالَتِ الأَنْصَارُ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ”أَحْسَنَتِ الأَنْصَارُ، تَسَمُّوا بِاسْمِي، وَلاَ تَكْتَنُوا بِكُنْيَتِي، فَإِنَّمَا أَنَا قَاسِمٌ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that a child was born to one of us, so he named him Qasim. The Ansar said: "We will not call you Abu al-Qasim, nor will we cool your eyes (by doing so)." So that man went to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him what the Ansar had said. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Ansar have done well. Name after my name, but do not take my kunyah, for I am (truly) al-Qasim."
