Hadith 836

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), who reports from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "Name yourselves after me, but do not take my kunyah. Indeed, I am Abu al-Qasim."

Benefits and Issues:
There is a difference of opinion regarding this issue. The preferred view is that this prohibition was specific to the lifetime of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, so that no confusion would arise with him, as is mentioned in the following hadith: a Companion called someone whose kunya was Abu al-Qasim, and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam thought that he was being called. Now that this reason no longer exists, it is permissible to use both the name and the kunya together or separately.
