Hadith 831

حَدَّثَنَا قَبِيصَةُ، قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مَوْلَى آلِ طَلْحَةَ، عَنْ كُرَيْبٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّ اسْمَ جُوَيْرِيَةَ كَانَ بَرَّةَ، فَسَمَّاهَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جُوَيْرِيَةَ‏.‏
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that the name of Sayyidah Juwayriyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) was Barrah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) named her Juwayriyyah.

Benefits and Issues:
Barrah is derived from "birr," which means righteousness. In this, there is an implication of self-purification. Similarly, if someone says that Barrah is here while she is not present, and another replies that Barrah (the righteous one) is not here, then this statement is also disliked.
