Hadith 825

حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ، قَالَ‏:‏ حَدَّثَنَا عِمْرَانُ الْقَطَّانُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَوْفَى، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا، ذُكِرَ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ‏:‏ شِهَابٌ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ‏: ”بَلْ أَنْتَ هِشَامٌ‏.‏“
It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that a man was mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) who was called Shahab. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "No, rather you are Hisham."

From this narration, it is understood that naming someone "Shihab" is disliked. "Shihab" refers to the stars that fall at night, and in reality, it means a flame of Hellfire; therefore, this name is disliked.
