Hadith 816

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him), he said that Mundhir bin Abi Usaid was born and he was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) seated him on his thigh. Sayyiduna Abu Usaid (may Allah be pleased with him) was also sitting there. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) became occupied with some work, and at the request of Sayyiduna Abu Usaid (may Allah be pleased with him), the child was lifted from the Prophet’s thigh. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) finished and turned his attention, he asked: “Where is the child?” Sayyiduna Abu Usaid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah! We have sent him home. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked: “What is his name?” They said: So-and-so! The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “No, rather his name is Mundhir.” Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) named him Mundhir on that day.
