حَدَّثَنَا صَدَقَةُ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ قَالَ: وُلِدَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنَّا غُلاَمٌ فَسَمَّاهُ: الْقَاسِمَ، فَقُلْنَا: لاَ نُكَنِّيكَ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ وَلاَ كَرَامَةَ، فَأُخْبِرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ: ”سَمِّ ابْنَكَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ.“
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that a son was born to one of us, so he named him Qasim. We said: We will neither call you Abu al-Qasim nor honor you with that title. This was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so he said: "Name your son Abdur-Rahman."
