It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that a son was born to one of us, so he named him Qasim. We said: We will neither call you Abu al-Qasim nor honor you with that title. This was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so he said: "Name your son Abdur-Rahman."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Usman Muneeb
Benefits and Issues: ➊ The kunyah (patronymic) of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was Abu al-Qasim, therefore the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum did not approve of calling anyone else by this kunyah. ➋ Whenever you (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) changed a name, you would choose a good name. Thus, ‘Abd al-Rahman was, in your view, even better than the name Qasim, because it is the most beloved to Allah Ta’ala.
