It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Wahb Jushami (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Name yourselves after the names of the Prophets, and the most beloved names to Allah Almighty are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman. The truest names are Harith and Hammam, and the worst names are Harb and Murrah."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits and Issues: ➊ The phrase “Name yourselves after the names of the Prophets” is not authentic; the rest of the hadith is authentic, however, naming after the Prophets is a commendable act, especially when the intention is to express love for the Prophets. ➋ The names Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman are the most beloved to Allah Ta’ala because they express servitude (‘ubudiyyah). The truth about Harith is that every person is a harith (earner), whether he earns for this world or the Hereafter. The meaning of Hammam is one who is constantly thinking, because every person thinks of one thing after another. Murrah and Harb are, in terms of meaning, unpleasant; Murrah means “bitter” and Harb means “war.”
