Hadith 799

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Shuraid (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made me ride behind him and said: "Do you remember any verses of Umayyah bin Abi Salt?" I said: Yes! Then I recited one verse, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Recite more." Until I had recited one hundred verses to him.

Benefits and Issues:
If poetry is based on wisdom and does not contain shirk (associating partners with Allah) or indecency, then listening to and reciting such poetry is permissible. However, excessive engagement in poetry, even if it is good, is blameworthy.
